    --- Elements FAQ ---
War of the Elements™ Frequently Asked Questions
    Updated March 31, 2011
Compiled by Edwin Teh, with contributions from Dave DeLaney, Jennifer Dery, and Simon Key

This set is legal for sanctioned Constructed play from April 26, 2011.

    1. Rules updates
    1.1 Talents
    * From War of the Elements forward, new heroes will no longer have the Talent restriction, and Talents will now look like this:

Arcane Talent (You can’t put Fire Talents or Frost Talents in your deck.)

    * Talents are neither keywords nor powers; they are text and deckbuilding restrictions.
    * A deck can include cards of one talent, only if it contains no cards of any other talent.
    * Heroes from previous sets with a printed Talent can include only that kind of Talent in their decks. Traitor heroes can’t include any Talents in their deck.
    * Talents from previous sets will be considered to have this new Talent text, instead of their old “(Talent) Hero Required” text.

    1.2 Totems
    * From War of the Elements forward, all Totems will work the same way.
    * All Totems are now “Ability Ally” and count as both card types.
    - Cards that interact with abilities will treat Totems as abilities in all zones.
    - Cards that interact with allies will treat Totems as allies in all zones.
    * Most previous rules for Totems have been removed. The only rule for all Totems is:
    - Totems can’t attack.
    * Totems from previous sets will be considered to have “Ability Ally”, 0 ATK, and a damage type.

    2. Specific cards
Agonizing Poison, 1, Rogue, Instant Ability—Assassination Poison
Attach to target hero or ally that was dealt combat damage by your hero this turn. <p> Ongoing: At the start of your turn, your hero deals 3 nature damage to attached character if its controller has four or fewer cards in his hand.

This triggered effect resolves before your draw step. Count cards in that player’s hand as it resolves.

    Arcane Barrage, 3, Mage, Ability—Arcane
Arcane Talent (You can’t put Fire Talents or Frost Talents in your deck.) <p> This ability can’t be interrupted.
Your hero deals 4 arcane damage to target hero or ally. <p> You may play this ability from your graveyard. As you do, the next time it would enter a graveyard from anywhere, remove it from the game instead.

A link is interrupted if all of its targets have become illegal as it tries to resolve, even if it “can’t be interrupted.”

If you play this from your graveyard, it’s removed from the chain as it resolves or is interrupted.

Axe of Grounded Flame, 2, ...

    Worldbreaker FAQ
    Worldbreaker Heroes

    Worldbreaker™ Frequently Asked Questions
    Updated December 2, 2010
Compiled by Edwin Teh, with contributions from Dave DeLaney, Jennifer Dery and Simon Key
This set is legal for sanctioned Constructed play from December 14, 2010.

    1. Rules updates
    1.1 Striking with Weapons
    · You can only strike with a weapon as your hero attacks or defends. This is the only time you can strike with a
    weapon.
    · Striking a weapon associates that weapon with your hero for this combat. It doesn’t use the chain.
    · While associated, your hero has that weapon’s ATK and damage type. Your hero also has Long-Range while
associated with a weapon with Long-Range
    · A weapon stops being associated with a hero as it changes zones, changes controllers, or stops being a weapon.

    1.2 Totems

    · Most previous rules for Totems have been removed. The only rules for all Totems are:
    o Totems can’t attack.
o While in play, a Totem is also an ally.
    · Totems from Worldbreaker onwards are “Ability Ally” and count as both card types in all zones.
    · Previously printed Totems are not receiving functional errata. While in play, they count as both “Ability” and
“Ally”, but are only “Ability” in all other zones.

    1.3 Equipment
    · Equipment is now a card type.
o The six card types are ability, ally, equipment, hero, location, and quest.

    1.4 Forms
    · Forms from Worldbreaker onwards aren’t destroyed when you strike with a weapon or play a non-Feral
    ability.
    · Previously printed Forms are not receiving functional errata, so striking with a weapon and playing non-Feral
    abilities will still destroy them.

    2. New keyword powers

    · Aberration is a keyword power that characters can have. It means:
Prevent all non-combat damage that would be dealt to this character.

    · Stash: [Text] is a keyword power that cards can have. It means:
As this card enters your resource row from anywhere, if it would enter face down, you may have it enter face
up, then immediately turn it face down instead. When you do, [text].
o As a card with such a power enters your resource row face down, you may stash it no matter where it came from
or whether it had powers there. For example, you may stash a card that is put into your resource row from play
    while it has no powers.
o While you stash, a card is blank except for its stash power. As a result, it doesn’t violate uniqueness.
o A triggered effect from a card’s stash power is controlled by the player whose resource row that card enters.
o Some Mounts have a power that triggers “when you place a resource into your resource ...

    Equipment

We reference “equipment” all the time on cards, but up until now, the word has never appeared on any type line. This is obviously not very clear, especially to new players without a background in the MMO. Starting in Worldbreaker, “equipment” will appear on the type line of all weapons, armor, and items. This has minor implications for certain cards (I’m sure King Varian will survive the nerf), but it was done for the sake of clarity.

    Rogue finishing moves

This isn’t so much a rules change as it is a change in design philosophy. We will no longer be tagging new Rogue abilities as “Combos,” and Finishing Moves going forward will ask you to remove any Rogue ability in your graveyard from the game. The downside to this change is that previous Finishing Moves won’t interact with new Rogue abilities. The pluses are a significant reduction in complexity, more open-ended deck building with the new abilities, and a much easier time making Finishing Moves work in Limited play.

    Druid forms

Druid forms are an important part of the class, but their original implementation is too complicated and frustrating for us to highlight at lower rarities. Since they are such a significant part of the MMO, we wanted to make them a little easier to play with and keep track of.

    What this means:

    1) New forms will not break when you play non-Feral abilities or strike with weapons.

    2) They will still be tagged as “Form (1),” so playing a second form will cause one of them to be destroyed.

    3) They will also be tagged as Bear, Cat, etc. on the type line, so cards like Feral Charge work as they did previously.

    4) Old forms are not receiving functional errata, so non-Feral abilities and weapon striking will still destroy them.

    Striking with Weapons

The new rules for striking with weapons are as follows:

You can only strike with a weapon as your hero attacks or defends. This is the only time you can strike with a weapon.
Striking a weapon associates that weapon with your hero for this combat. It doesn't use the chain.
While associated, your hero has that weapon’s ATK and damage type. Your hero also has Long-Range while associated with a weapon with Long-Range.
A weapon stops being associated with a hero as it changes zones, changes controllers, or stops being a weapon.

The previous rules for striking with weapons were very complicated and unintuitive, two huge warning signs for the basic rules of a game. In fact, whenever a card highlighted the exact timing window for weapon striking (say, something that destroyed a weapon at instant speed, or a strike trigger that exhausted an ally), we would often remove those cards from the file specifically because we did not want players to have to know the nuances of those rules. Additionally, the timing on the old ...

    --- Icecrown FAQ ---

This set is legal for sanctioned Constructed play from September 14, 2010.

    1. Deckbuilding

    * Each hero has special rules. Their decks can include only the cards specified after the word "deckbuilding." That word is neither a keyword nor power, and deckbuilding rules have no impact after a game starts.

    * You can only include either [Alliance] or [Horde] cards.
In Constructed tournaments, you pick a faction and your main deck and side deck can include cards with that faction. In Limited tournaments, you pick a faction and your main deck can include cards with that faction. However, if your card pool contains both [Alliance] and [Horde] cards you may side deck between [Alliance] / [Horde] as long as all the cards with a faction in your main deck share a faction.

    * A card is neutral if it has no trait icons outside its text box.

    * You can't include cards with other reputations or other text restrictions.
Exclusion takes precedence over any inclusions.
    The eleven Scourge Hero's decks can include The Lich King;
The four Argent Crusade Hero's decks can include Highlord Trion Fordring; and
Syreian, Angerboda, Savryn, Dalronn and Ufrang's decks can include Kel'Thuzad.
(Because they all specify that only "other" text restrictions apply).

    2. Argent Crusade reputation

    * Reputations are neither keywords nor powers; they are deckbuilding restrictions.

    * A deck can include cards of one reputation only if it contains no cards of any other reputation.

    3. Specific cards

    Arcane Binding, 2, Mage, Ability—Arcane (Icecrown-39R)
Attach to target hero. <p> Ongoing: As this ability enters play, choose "ability," "ally," or "equipment."
Attached hero's controller can't play more than one card of the chosen kind per turn.

You choose as this attaches. If a player has already played one or more of the chosen kind this turn as this attaches to his hero, he can't play any more of them this turn. Placing a resource is different from playing a card.

    Banshee Soulclaimer, 4, Scourge Ally—Banshee, Unlimited, 4 [Shadow] / 3 Health (Icecrown-148C)
    ...

    Wrathgate FAQ
    OFFICIAL CARD REFERENCE (Wrathgate)

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    --- Wrathgate FAQ ---

This set is legal for sanctioned Constructed play from May 25, 2010.

    1. For each Hunter and Warrior you control / the number of Rogues and Shaman you control

    * A character with two different applicable classes counts twice.

    2. Argent Crusade reputation

    * Reputations are neither keywords nor powers; they are deckbuilding restrictions.
    * A deck can include cards of one reputation only if it contains no cards of any other reputation.

    3. Specific cards

Nuvon Dawnfury, Horde, Hero—Blood Elf Mage (Arcane), Mining/Skinning, 25 Health (Wrathgate-17)
On your turn: Flip Nuvon, discard a Mage >>> When you draw a card this turn, Nuvon may deal 1 arcane damage to target ally.

Resolving Nuvon's flip creates a triggered modifier that triggers when you draw a card. The triggered effect it creates is "Nuvon may deal 1 arcane damage to target ally." That target is not chosen until that triggered effect is added to the chain.

Multiple cards are drawn one at a time, so if you draw two cards, this power triggers twice and you may target a different ally for each triggered effect.

    Highlord Tirion Fordring, 10, Master Hero—Human Paladin, 2 [Holy] / 37 Health (Wrathgate-21E)
[Druid], [Paladin], [Priest], or [Shaman] Hero Required <p> Argent Crusade Reputation
Unique allies you own everywhere can't be targeted by opponents.
On your turn: [Activate] >>> Put target Unique ally from your graveyard into play.

Face down resources usually have no tags or card type, and so they can be targeted by opponents as usual.

Master heroes start the game in a deck. A deck can include a Master hero with a certain name only if it contains no Master heroes with any other name. A Master hero enters a party face up with the same attachments, counters, damage, and ready/exhausted state as that party’s previous hero, and then that previous hero is removed from the game. A Master hero can’t be flipped or turned face down, and a hero removed from the game this way can’t leave that RFG zone. Any links targeting that previous hero now target the Master hero, and any modifiers to that previous hero now apply to the Master hero within their durations.

    Flash of Brilliance, 3, Mage, Ability—Arcane (Wrathgate-45R)
Ongoing: At the start of your turn, you may destroy this ability. If you do, search your collection for an Ongoing [Mage] ability, reveal it, and put it into your hand.

For Classic constructed and limited formats, your collec...

Hello, World of Warcraft Trading Card Game fans. As you probably know by now, our Class Starter Decks are slated to hit the streets in July. While there are some exclusive cards in the starter, the decks are primarily composed of reprints. The cards selected for reprinting were selected on the merits of simplicity, relevance to the MMO, and mechanical flavor for each particular class. While these decks haven’t been released yet, the reprint list is live and these cards are legal in Core tournaments, including the upcoming Continental Championships in Las Vegas, USA and Paris, France.

We had initially intended for these decks to be released alongside Wrath Gate, but some unforeseen delays caused the date to be rolled back. Some of the cards, detailed below, receive functional errata in the Class Starter Decks. The cards that received errata did so due to our concerns about intuitiveness or outdated language, not for power level. The following errata will go live with the update to the Wrath Gate OCR update and will be effective with that update. That means the listed cards will work differently for all future tournaments, including the NACC and EUCC.

    1. Polymorph changes from “loses powers” to “loses and can’t gain powers”

We always felt it was strange when a Polymorphed ally gained a power, especially a passive power like mend which worked just fine on a Polymorphed ally. In addition, tracking the time stamping of Polymorph vs. powers added onto allies before and after the attaching is unpleasant. This synchs up Polymorph with our other “loses powers” effects, which going forward will always say, “loses and can’t gain powers.”

    2. Chain Lightning changes from “choose two other heroes and/or allies” to “target up to three heroes and/or allies”

Chain Lightning was originally worded this way to simulate the function it has in the online game (henceforth referred to as ‘MMO’), where the spell has a single target but also hits additional different enemies. However, we feel now that this ability hitting untargetable heroes or allies was extremely counter-intuitive for the average player, and the wording on Chain Lightning was both clunky and hard to parse out. Chain Lightning now works the same as Greater Chain Lightning, in-line with every other Shaman ability that can hit multiple heroes and allies.

    3. Consecration changes to “Deal 2 unpreventable Holy damage to each opposing hero and ally”

The powers-that-be back in the day wanted to simulate a “small AoE”, which would have a limited effectiveness in multi-player games. While their hearts were in the right place, the original wording is non-intuitive to both MMO players (since Consecration doesn’t target in the MMO) and TCG players (since the language is so bizarre compared to all of our AoE effects). We changed Consecration to line up with our other AoE effects.

    4. Shadowfiend changes from “Unique” to “Pet: 1”

    Shadowfiend used to fu...
