The World of Warcraft Trading Card Game is ready to make you a Champion! Champion Decks are preconstructed tournament-legal 60-card decks that let you play as iconic heroes of Azeroth like Jaina Proudmoore and Sylvanas Windrunner, as well as infamous Monsters like Hogger himself. With five decks and five classes to choose from, it's your decision: do you want to be heroic, or monstrous?

    Jaina Proudmoore (Mage)

“I hate resorting to violence!” The Alliance’s most powerful Mage blinks onto the scene, casting Frostbolts and freezing opposing forces in place. Lady Jaina has the power of frost at her fingertips, with abilities like Frost Nova, Glacial Tomb, and Ice Lance. Her abilities are not enough to decimate her opponents, though, so she is assisted by the best that the Alliance has to offer. Roke the Ice Baron brings an army of frost allies to assist Lady Jaina. If this group of Alliance had their way, nothing they came up against would ever thaw out.

    Dark Lady Sylvanas Windrunner (Hunter)

"The Banshee Queen has plans for you!” The Dark Lady has a plethora of Hunter abilities at her disposal. From Arcane Shot to Turn the Blade and Steady Shot, she has the firepower to take out anything in the way of her army of Horde allies. In addition to those versatile Hunter abilities, she also has Multi-Shot to deal with multiple opposing allies at once. From afar, she can pepper the opposition with arrows from her bow, Windrunner’s Heartseeker. The more Undead that come along, the bigger her bow gets.

    Hogger (Warrior)

“Forest just setback!” If it's brute force you're looking for, Hogger is the hero for you! The powerful Gnoll Warrior has what it takes to decimate the opposing forces with abilities like Execute and Monstrous Cleave. No Warrior would be complete without an arsenal of weapons, such as the mighty Sulfuras, The Extinguished Hand. Hogger isn't alone in this battle, though. Powerful Ogres, such as Grag’tok and Throk the Conqueror, are also ready to charge onto the battlefield.

    Murkdeep (Shaman)

“Rr mgg Gggmlmmm Lgmlmgl m Mrrrlrml.” Murlocs show their strength in numbers, and Murkdeep and his Monster allies are no different. From Element’s Fury to the decimating Greater Chain Lightning, this Shaman has what it takes to dispense with opposing allies. Murkdeep is not alone in his fight—he brings a lot of Murlocs with him. Chumly and Gobbler lead the charge with an army of Murloc Coastrunners behind them. If your forces are dwindling, you can call in reinforcements with Unleash the Swarm!

    Elderlimb (Druid)

“Prudence should not mean granting our enemy unnecessary advantages.” Do not be fooled by the healing power of the Ancients—they also bring with them an entire army of Treants. Elderlimb calls on the power of Nature's Reach and Verdant Boon to fill his side of the battlefield. These powerful allies are not alone; more Ancients also j...

    www.wowtcg.com/articles/2011/08/01/...upcoming-events

As you may have already read in Patrick Sullivan’s article, we feel strongly about improving the Core Constructed format. We want to keep the metagame active for your enjoyment, as well as make the format as accessible as possible so you have more people to play with. The cliff notes version of this change: starting with the release of Aftermath block in October, Core format will include the two most recently released blocks. For Core format at the 2011 World Championship, players can expect to see cards from Worldbreaker, War of the Elements, Twilight of the Dragons and Throne of the Tides (as well as all the special releases in between, like Class Starter Decks, Crafting Redemption cards, and Holiday exclusives from hobby store play). If you want a shortcut, everything with a ‘5’ or ‘6’ stamp at the bottom of the card will be legal.

    2011 World Championship

Classic format is here to stay, and we’ll be supporting it this year and next in a variety of ways. First, you’ll need a Classic deck in Rotterdam if you want to win your share of the $250,000 World Championship purse. The tournament schedule will go as follows:

Day 1 (Friday, November 11): 6 rounds of Core Constructed followed by 4 rounds of Classic Constructed

Day 2 (Saturday, November 12th): 6 rounds of Draft format play. Each draft will be run with 3 booster packs of Throne of the Tides.

Day 3 (Sunday, November 13th): Top 16 Cut. Players will use their Core Constructed decks from Day 1.

The World Championship is our highest level of event that we host annually, and we want our 2011 World Championship to showcase our top players’ prowess in a variety of tournament formats. Show us your skills!

You may notice that there’s now a Top 16 cut. Yes, we’re including another 8 in the Sunday playoff for all events Darkmoon Faire level and higher. We want to give more players the opportunity to show off their talents and participate in the most prestigious playoffs of each World of Warcraft Trading Card Game tournament weekend.

    2011-2012 Upcoming Organized Play Events/Formats

Darkmoon Faire Poznań (August 25–August 28): This event occurs before the release of Throne of the Tides, and the main event will here will the three-block version of Core.

PAX Prime (August 26–August 28): We have a full schedule of events for Seattle’s biggest game festival.

2011 State Championships (September 17–18): This North American program will be Worldbreaker Block Constructed.

Darkmoon Faire Philadelphia (September 30–October 2): Friday will offer players a first look at the Aftermath Block, during the Throne of the Tides Sneak Preview. The main event this weekend is Worldbreaker Block Constructed. Throughout the weekend, players will be able to part...

    www.wowtcg.com/articles/2011/08/01/core-rotation

Of all the reasons that TCGs are fun, “always changing” might be at the very top of the list. Every time a new set comes out, it introduces new archetypes or tools for established decks. In the case of rotating formats, such as Core, the departure of old sets means that some influential cards also leave. This can change a format in multiple ways. The most obvious example is decks that hinge on cards that are rotating out; those decks obviously fall by the wayside. Some other results are more subtle. For example, if a block is heavy in powerful AoE (Area of Effect) cards, that block’s rotation might make decks with lots of small allies more effective, even if the new set doesn’t introduce anything especially good for rush decks.

This is part of the necessity of Core from a game design perspective—if cards never leave a format, it’s extremely likely that the format stagnates. Each new set that comes out represents a smaller fraction of the total card pool than each set that came before it. We are faced with two options in a world where Classic is the only format: either power creep to such a degree that each set invalidates a lot of what was printed in the past, or make sets that are unlikely to impact the format much. Neither option is appealing to you as players or to us.

None of what I just said should surprise anyone, but I want to frame the context for set development as it relates to competitive Constructed play. While the example I gave about Classic is extreme, it applies to Core to a degree as well. Whenever we make a powerful ally or ability, people are excited for the metagame to be shaken up, to build a new deck, or by whatever else gets them going. However, Powerful Ally X, while fun at first, potentially becomes a card that prevents other, newer cards from entering the Constructed scene. Individual cards or decks are generally enjoyable in small doses or over short periods of time in TCGs, and even in a rotating format, three years is a long time to be staring down the same allies or considering the same oppressive abilities while building new decks.

When the decision was first made to introduce Core, the number of years that sets would be legal was a contentious topic internally. The main motivating factor for choosing three years was to soften the initial blow of rotation. We expected many players to reactive negatively to the announcement at first, even though we were confidant most people would enjoy Core significantly more than Classic in the long term. By only rotating out Heroes of Azeroth block (which, at that point, had very few cards that impacted the Constructed metagame), we hoped to reduce some of the sting of the announcement. I disagreed with the decision for three years of legality at the time, but I understood the desire to hedge our bets. Even though Core h...

    Introducing the Archaeology Crafting Program!

    by Mike Rosenberg

Have you ever gone through your crafting materials in order to redeem for your Cobrascale Hood, only to find that you're one measly Cobra Scales short of redemption? Have you every found that, no matter how many packs you buy, you just keep getting unnecessary crafting cards for what you want?

Have you ever opened a pack of a World of Warcraft TCG expansion and wondered, “What the heck is this Primal Earth supposed to do for me?!”

Cryptozoic Entertainment has listened to your feedback, and is happy to introduce a new take on the crafting redemption program with the Worldbreaker expansion – the Archaeology Crafting Program.

The Archaeology Crafting Program is a new twist on the original crafting redemption. Each pack of Worldbreaker comes with a Tol'vir Archaeology Fragment. Once you've collected 24 fragments, you can redeem them to the address provided at www.wowtcg.com/crafting for one of the three cards listed. It's that simple!

So, why the change? It was based on player feedback. Sets such as Wrath Gate brought back older crafting materials for some of the different cards you could redeem for. This confused players, and for those that only bought packs occasionally, it was very difficult for them to ever assemble the crafting materials for the card they wanted.

Ry Shueller, organized play representative at Cryptozoic Entertainment, shared some details on the new program and why it was introduced. “Players were very confused about how the crafting redemption program worked,” he said. “The problem was that they didn't know what sets they needed to buy booster packs from if older crafting cards were used again.”

“Then there was the problem of people getting a crafting card for the deck they were playing,” he added. “With the Archaeology Crafting Program, players can collect them any time they purchase a pack of Worldbreaker. Once they get 24 Tol'vir Archaeology Fragments, they can redeem it for one of the three cards.” There are no awkward surprises with this program. Once you buy 24 packs of Worldbreaker, you will be able to craft one of the cards available to you.

The redemption form for the Archaeology Crafting Program will go live on www.wowtcg.com/crafting on December 14th, the same day that Worldbreaker goes on sale. Be sure to check out the site then to see what goodies you can redeem your Tol’vir Archeology Fragments for!

    Equipment

We reference “equipment” all the time on cards, but up until now, the word has never appeared on any type line. This is obviously not very clear, especially to new players without a background in the MMO. Starting in Worldbreaker, “equipment” will appear on the type line of all weapons, armor, and items. This has minor implications for certain cards (I’m sure King Varian will survive the nerf), but it was done for the sake of clarity.

    Rogue finishing moves

This isn’t so much a rules change as it is a change in design philosophy. We will no longer be tagging new Rogue abilities as “Combos,” and Finishing Moves going forward will ask you to remove any Rogue ability in your graveyard from the game. The downside to this change is that previous Finishing Moves won’t interact with new Rogue abilities. The pluses are a significant reduction in complexity, more open-ended deck building with the new abilities, and a much easier time making Finishing Moves work in Limited play.

    Druid forms

Druid forms are an important part of the class, but their original implementation is too complicated and frustrating for us to highlight at lower rarities. Since they are such a significant part of the MMO, we wanted to make them a little easier to play with and keep track of.

    What this means:

    1) New forms will not break when you play non-Feral abilities or strike with weapons.

    2) They will still be tagged as “Form (1),” so playing a second form will cause one of them to be destroyed.

    3) They will also be tagged as Bear, Cat, etc. on the type line, so cards like Feral Charge work as they did previously.

    4) Old forms are not receiving functional errata, so non-Feral abilities and weapon striking will still destroy them.

    Striking with Weapons

The new rules for striking with weapons are as follows:

You can only strike with a weapon as your hero attacks or defends. This is the only time you can strike with a weapon.
Striking a weapon associates that weapon with your hero for this combat. It doesn't use the chain.
While associated, your hero has that weapon’s ATK and damage type. Your hero also has Long-Range while associated with a weapon with Long-Range.
A weapon stops being associated with a hero as it changes zones, changes controllers, or stops being a weapon.

The previous rules for striking with weapons were very complicated and unintuitive, two huge warning signs for the basic rules of a game. In fact, whenever a card highlighted the exact timing window for weapon striking (say, something that destroyed a weapon at instant speed, or a strike trigger that exhausted an ally), we would often remove those cards from the file specifically because we did not want players to have to know the nuances of those rules. Additionally, the timing on the old ...

January 1, 2011. We're starting the year right with Realm Qualifiers! Success in Realm Qualifiers leads to the Realm Championship on April 16th and 17th, a tournament held in each respective realm with prizes for the most dedicated players within the area. For the Championship, we usually give away promos, product, Loot cards, and travel vouchers. We haven't finalized that yet. The 6-man battle royale to determine the prizes is our next Organized Play meeting.

Branching out from playing at their local store's Battlegrounds, players will travel within their local area to win prizes and earn points. Cryptozoic will hand-pick stores to host Qualifiers in each realm, and players need 10 points to earn their spot in the Realm Championship. The points are allocated like so:

    1st: 10 points
    2nd: 10 points
    3rd - 4th: 6 points
    5th - 8th: 4 points
    9th+: 3 points

A player with 10 points may participate in any one (1) Realm Championship.

As you can see, you lock up a slot with a Qualifier win, or you can ensure your slot through sheer dedication. We want everybody to have a chance at the title. The Core Constructed portion of Realm Qualifiers start on January 1st, 2011 and ends on March 4th, 2011. The Sealed Deck portion of Realm Qualifiers start on March 5th, 2011 and ends on April 9th, 2011. You can see the prizes here, and Booster Pack prize support will also be included and the amount will be dependent on number of players in the tournament. We'll provide Series 3 Priest Deck Boxes to the Top 8 and two door prize winners as well.

Constructed tournaments are $10, and Sealed Deck tournaments (6 packs) are $30. Local currency equivalent where applicable.

    The realms are as follows:

    North America
    • Ashenvale Forest - Northern California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Alaska
